Childminders and the Foundation Phase
The Foundation Phase Framework for 3 - 7 year olds in Wales is about enhancing the learning experiences which enable children to be creative, imaginative and to have fun whilst learning. It aims to link together all areas of a child's learning in a play-based framework. Great emphasis is placed on experiential learning, active involvement and developing each child's;
social, emotional, physical and intellectual well-being, so as to develop the
attitudes to learning so that they enjoy it and will want to continue with
their education for longer
and self-confidence to experiment, investigate, learn new things and form new
expressive and observational skills to encourage their development as
individuals with different ways of responding to experiences, and
in the outdoors where they have first-hand experience of solving real-life
problems and learn about conservation and sustainability.
The Foundation Phase has seven Areas of Learning, where stimulating play activities can be woven into the learning experiences. Each of the seven areas will support and encourage each child's personal, social, emotional, physical and intellectual well-being and development.
Childminders are ideally placed to facilitate learning through play and because we work in our own homes, children can experience real life learning. It's these real-life experiences, such as shopping, cooking or gardening, that many parents want their children's earliest learning to be based on.
